1. Start with: (49 - (-40) - (-3) + 69)
2. Change the first subtraction of a negative:
   (49 - (-40) = 49 + 40)
3. Add:
   (49 + 40 = 89)
4. Now the expression is:
   (89 - (-3) + 69)
5. Change the next subtraction of a negative:
   (89 - (-3) = 89 + 3)
6. Add:
   (89 + 3 = 92)
7. Add the last number:
   (92 + 69 = 161)
