Goal: Find the number that comes just after the largest 3-digit number.
- What is a 3-digit number?
It has three places: hundreds, tens, ones. Examples: \(100, 245, 999\). - Largest 3-digit number
All digits are the biggest (9). So the largest is \(999\). - What does successor mean?
Successor = the next number = add \(1\). - Add 1 to 999
\(999 + 1 = 1000\) - Why does it become 1000?
Add in ones place: \(9+1=10\) → write \(0\), carry \(1\).
Add in tens place: \(9+1=10\) → write \(0\), carry \(1\).
Add in hundreds place: \(9+1=10\) → write \(0\), carry \(1\) to the next place (thousands).
We get \(1000\).
Therefore, the successor of the largest 3-digit number \((999)\) is \(1000\).
