Step 1: Make the decimals have the same number of places.

Write (3.4) as (3.40). (Adding a zero at the end does not change the value.)

Now we compare: (3.25) and (3.40).

Step 2: Compare place by place.

Ones place: both are (3).

Tenths place: (2) (in (3.25)) and (4) (in (3.40)).

Step 3: Decide using the tenths.

Since (2 < 4), the number with (2) in the tenths place is smaller.

Conclusion: (3.25 < 3.4).
