   \(\text{total parts} = 9\)
2. Count the unshaded squares.
   \(\text{unshaded parts} = 5\)
3. Fraction of the unshaded part is:
   \(\dfrac{\text{unshaded parts}}{\text{total parts}}\)
4. Substitute the numbers:
   \(\dfrac{5}{9}\)
5. Check simplification: 5 and 9 have no common factor other than 1, so it is already simplest.
   \(\gcd(5,9)=1\)

Answer: \(\dfrac{5}{9}\)
