Question 48

Question. 48

Name the points and then the line segments in each of the following figures (Fig. 2.30).

Answer:

(i) Points: A, B, C. Segments: AB, BC, CA.

(ii) Points: A, B, C, D. Segments: AB, BC, CD, DA.

(iii) Points: A, B, C, D, E. Segments: AB, BC, CD, DE, EA, AD.

(iv) Points: A, B, C, D, E, F. Segments: AB (shown as A–E–B in one line), EF (vertical), CD (horizontal).

Detailed Answer with Explanation:

Read the labels first. Then list all points. Finally, trace every straight path between two labeled points to list the line segments.

(i) Triangle-like figure

  1. Look at the labels you can see: A, B, C.
  2. Write the points in one place: A, B, C.
  3. Trace the sides with your finger:
    • From A to B → segment AB
    • From B to C → segment BC
    • From C to A → segment CA
  4. List the segments: AB, BC, CA.

(ii) Four-point closed figure

  1. Labels are A, B, C, D.
  2. Write the points: A, B, C, D.
  3. Move along the sides in order:
    • A to B → AB
    • B to C → BC
    • C to D → CD
    • D to A → DA
  4. List the segments: AB, BC, CD, DA.

(iii) Five-point figure with one extra diagonal

  1. Labels are A, B, C, D, E.
  2. Write the points: A, B, C, D, E.
  3. Trace all visible straight connections:
    • A to B → AB
    • B to C → BC
    • C to D → CD
    • D to E → DE
    • E to A → EA
    • Extra inside line A to D → AD
  4. List the segments: AB, BC, CD, DE, EA, AD.

(iv) Six points with three distinct straight lines

  1. Labels are A, B, C, D, E, F.
  2. Write the points: A, B, C, D, E, F.
  3. Identify the straight lines present:
    • One slanted line passes through A, E, B. The visible segment between A and B is written as AB (points A–E–B lie on the same line).
    • One vertical line joins E and F → EF.
    • One horizontal line joins C and D → CD.
  4. List the segments: AB, EF, CD.

Conclusion: For each sub-figure, list all labeled points first. Then include every straight connection between two labeled points as a line segment. If multiple labeled points lie on one straight line, name the segment by its end points.
